Istanbul’s Bayrampasa municipality has wangled the Guinness World Record for knitting the world’s largest sweater.

Guinness World Record for knitting

Measuring 151 feet long and 52.5 feet wide, the massive pullover is part of a campaign by the Turkish government to encourage its people to lower their thermostats and wear warmer clothing, a move that could save the country $2 billion a year in energy costs.

The sweater, which comprises close to 1,100 pounds of wool yarn, required the efforts of 90 people over 30 days.

The initiative was inspired by National Sweater Day, which is celebrated in Canada on February 9 every year.
