Waterscape Office: A sustainable design project celebrating Japanese tradition

Soffitto ondulato in alluminio riciclato nel Waterscape Office

The Waterscape Office is an extraordinary example of a sustainable design project, created by Moriyuki Ochiai Architects in collaboration with Harumaki Project for Japan Post Real Estate (JPRE). Located in Gotanda, Tokyo, this space is a perfect synthesis of innovation, tradition, and environmental responsibility. The projectโ€™s goal is to inspire creativity and foster collaboration among companies while celebrating the areaโ€™s history and natural heritage.

A sustainable design project

At the core of the project lies a simple yet powerful concept: using limited resources in innovative ways. The Waterscape Office ceiling is covered with recycled aluminum sheets, shaped into waves that evoke the movement of water. This design choice not only reduces environmental impact but also pays homage to the rice fields that once defined Gotanda.

The project draws inspiration from traditional Japanese craftsmanship:

  • Kimono Method: Just as a kimono is crafted from a single piece of fabric, the ceiling was created from a single aluminum sheet, transformed to serve multiple functions.
  • Origami and Furoshiki: The design reflects the ingenuity of Japanese arts, turning a flat surface into three-dimensional forms.

Multifunctional spaces designed for people

A sustainable design project must meet practical needs without sacrificing aesthetics. The Waterscape Office excels in adapting to various functions, offering spaces optimized for creativity and collaboration.

  • Entrance: Dynamic waves and varying ceiling heights create a sense of movement, inviting visitors into a stimulating space.
  • Lounge and Work Areas: The waves soften, fostering relaxation, focus, and productivity.
  • Bar and Kitchen: Intimate spaces with lower waves, perfect for meaningful conversations and convivial moments.
  • Multipurpose Area: Designed for events such as seminars, concerts, and performances, showcasing the projectโ€™s versatility.

A Play of natural light

The interaction between the wavy ceiling and natural light is a hallmark of the project. Changes in light conditions throughout the day and seasons create a poetic atmosphere, turning the environment into a unique experience. This creative use of light is integral to the concept of a sustainable design project, aiming to minimize reliance on artificial lighting.

Sustainability at the heart of the project

The Waterscape Office demonstrates how a sustainable design project can positively impact both the environment and society.

  • Recycled Materials: The use of recycled aluminum sheets reduces waste and gives new life to existing resources.
  • Reusability: The ceiling can be disassembled and reinstalled in new locations, minimizing costs and promoting a circular economy.

Conclusion

The Waterscape Office is more than just a shared space: it is an inspiring example of a sustainable design project that blends tradition, innovation, and environmental care. Thanks to the vision of Moriyuki Ochiai Architects and Harumaki Project, this project demonstrates how design can transform spaces into experiences that inspire creativity, connection, and environmental awareness.
