Plissade: textile acoustic partition between pleating, structure and recyclability

Divisorio tessile modulare autoportante con struttura piegata e pattern cromatico

Plissade is a textile acoustic partition that reinterprets a traditional furnishing element through a contemporary reading of pleating. The project does not rely on rigid frames or composite constructions, but instead develops a system in which the structure is generated exclusively through fabric manipulation. The innovative folding technique allows the material to stand independently, without additional supports, thanks to stiffening methods that avoid binders and adhesives.

Lightweight and modular, the system is designed to adapt to different spatial configurations in both residential and professional environments. The geometric rhythm of the surface, combined with chromatic variation, defines a strong visual presence, while the textile nature of the product contributes to acoustic comfort.

From textile to structure

Inspired by the structural qualities that garments acquire through pleating, the studio investigated whether textiles could become the primary structural element of acoustic partitions, without compromising the material’s inherent softness, flexibility and chromatic expressiveness. This ambition led to an intensive phase of research and prototyping, focused on material behavior and production methods.

During development, Luis Marie prioritized local production, collaborating with companies outside the interior design sector. The assembly process is based on technologies already used in fashion and automotive upholstery, where textiles are shaped and stabilized through precision and repetition. This approach enhances existing manufacturing expertise while reducing the need for new equipment and molds.

Plissade as a textile acoustic partition alternative

In recent years, acoustic solutions have become increasingly central; however, most products available on the market rely on fabrics glued to foam applied to wooden or metal frames, or on rigid pressed felt panels. The first approach presents significant environmental concerns, while the second limits flexibility, functionality and chromatic variation.

Plissade positions itself as an alternative to these consolidated models. The structure consists of a series of hollow rhomboid-section tubes formed by two interconnected textile layers, based on what the designers at Luis Marie define as the “fold and friction” method. By eliminating adhesives, resins and rigid reinforcements, the system results in a fully disassemblable and recyclable product at the end of its life cycle.

Process, materials and recognition

The project establishes a relationship between material research, production process and acoustic performance, translating a technique historically associated with textiles into a contemporary spatial device. The use of post-consumer recycled felt and cotton reinforces the material consistency of the system.

Plissade was awarded Textile Design of the Year at the Dezeen Awards 2025, recognizing its redefinition of acoustic partitions through textile design.
