Located within Ningbo’s Mingzhouli Shopping Center, the Hennessy Experience Space by MO Studio reimagines a compact 42-square-meter retail footprint as a sensory environment dedicated to the discovery of Cognac. Rather than functioning solely as a point of sale, the project creates an immersive setting where materiality, light, and spatial composition communicate the heritage and craftsmanship behind the brand. In a market where Cognac culture is still developing, the space serves as an educational and experiential destination that introduces visitors to the product through design.
The layout revolves around tasting and product discovery
The limited floor area becomes an opportunity to create a carefully choreographed spatial sequence. The experience unfolds around a central tasting counter, which acts as both the physical and symbolic core of the project, encouraging interaction between visitors and the product.
The spatial arrangement guides movement in a natural way while revealing different layers of the brand narrative. Display areas are designed not simply to present bottles, but to introduce visitors to the traditions, values, and production processes associated with Cognac through a progression of visual and sensory encounters.

Architectural elements reference the origins of Cognac production
A key feature of the project is the existing structural column, reinterpreted by MO Studio as an element reminiscent of vineyard supports. This gesture establishes a subtle connection to the agricultural origins of Cognac while reinforcing themes of landscape, cultivation, and time.
Angled walls contribute to the spatial experience while discreetly integrating concealed storage functions. The solution maintains visual clarity throughout the interior, reducing technical clutter and strengthening the continuity of the visitor journey.

Materials and finishes express the passage of time
Material selection plays a central role in defining the identity of the space. Handcrafted resin surfaces evoke the fluidity and amber hues of Cognac, creating visual effects that shift according to lighting conditions and viewing angles.
Stone flooring and metallic inlays introduce an additional narrative layer associated with ageing, transformation, and the gradual development of the spirit. The dialogue between warm finishes and reflective surfaces contributes to an intimate and immersive atmosphere.
Lighting enhances display, atmosphere and visual hierarchy
Lighting functions as both a navigational tool and a display strategy. Integrated fixtures highlight bottles and presentation surfaces, establishing focal points that accompany visitors throughout the experience.
The lighting design also shapes the overall mood of the interior. Reflections, transparency and subtle variations in brightness amplify the perception of materials and reinforce the immersive character of the environment, turning tasting into a multi-sensory experience.

The retail space becomes a cultural environment beyond commerce
The Hennessy Experience Space moves beyond the conventional role of product display to become a place of learning and engagement. Through architecture, materiality, and light, MO Studio develops an environment that communicates cultural narratives through direct experience.
In this context, retail design becomes a storytelling device capable of making abstract concepts such as memory, tradition, and time tangible, fostering a deeper relationship between brand, product, and visitor.
