Rilievi by Zaven: ceramic surfaces between geometry and three-dimensionality

Collezione di rivestimenti per l’interior design

Designed by Zaven – Enrica Cavarzan and Marco Zavagno – for CEDIT, Rilievi is a collection of ceramic surfaces that explores the transition from two-dimensional graphics to volume. Three-dimensional elements, geometry and colour transform large slabs into compositions that alter the perception of walls and space.

The Rilievi collection stems from Zaven’s ongoing research into the transformation of graphic signs into three-dimensional elements. Applied to ceramics, this experimentation introduces a volumetric component that extends the surface beyond its conventional role as a wall covering.

Three-dimensional elements characterised by different geometries and colours are applied to large CEDIT slabs, creating variable configurations in which surface, volume and colour become parts of a single compositional system.

From two-dimensional graphics to volume

Rilievi originates from Practice Practice Practice, a limited-edition ceramic artwork in which Zaven had already explored the relationship between graphic signs, repetition and three-dimensionality.

With Rilievi, this research is reinterpreted and transferred to industrial-scale production. The compositional principle remains based on modular repetition, but is developed through a system capable of generating multiple configurations.

The wall is therefore no longer treated as a uniform surface, but as a field on which three-dimensional elements can create rhythm, depth and perceptual variations.

Modules, geometry and colour

The collection combines different shapes and tones with large ceramic slabs available in a range of colours. The system is based on three three-dimensional modules whose arrangement makes it possible to create different compositions and customise the design of the surface.

Scale, repetition and combination thus become design tools through which the ceramic covering acquires volume.

“We wanted to explore the potential of ceramics to animate spaces by playing with scale and repetition. We therefore designed three different modules that can be configured in countless combinations, giving surfaces volume and depth.”

As Enrica Cavarzan and Marco Zavagno explain, the system is based on the possibility of combining the modules in variable configurations, transforming the surface into a dynamic element of the interior.

From craft experimentation to industrial production

The collaboration with CEDIT enabled Zaven to transfer this experimentation into an industrial production process, exploring the expressive and practical possibilities of ceramics on a larger scale.

Rilievi therefore brings together two different dimensions: the experimental and craft-based approach inherited from the original project and the serial nature of industrial production.

The result is a ceramic system in which module, material, colour and three-dimensionality make it possible to create variable surfaces, transforming the wall covering into an active element of interior design.
