The Sports Edit Flagship Store at Coal Drops Yard by Design4Retail

The Sports Edit flagship retail design consultancy Design4Retail

At Coal Drops Yard in London, Design4Retail developed the flagship store concept for The Sports Edit, translating the activewear retailer’s focus on sport, style and wellness into a physical environment defined by industrial materials, warm finishes and lifestyle-driven visual merchandising.

Established in 2015, The Sports Edit operates as a multi-channel retailer offering a curated selection of sportswear and accessories. Its approach extends beyond product retailing to embrace wellness and active lifestyles, combining fashion, training and editorial content across its physical and digital channels.

A flagship store within Coal Drops Yard

The flagship is located at Coal Drops Yard in King’s Cross, a former industrial complex transformed into a contemporary shopping destination while retaining much of its historic brick architecture, ironwork and cobbled surroundings.

Design4Retail used this architectural context as the starting point for a concept capable of combining The Sports Edit’s contemporary identity with the industrial character of the site. The resulting design is built around the idea of “Industrial Luxe”, balancing raw architectural references with warmer materials and softer colours.

Industrial Luxe: metal, brick and warm timber

The storefront sits within the characteristic arches of Coal Drops Yard. The glazing remains largely unobstructed, opening views into the boutique, while a display podium introduces the latest womenswear, menswear and accessories.

Inside, exposed brickwork, corrugated surfaces and metal mesh establish the industrial language of the store, with the mesh structures also referencing the visual vocabulary of sports changing rooms. These elements are balanced by warm timber tones, neutral finishes and planting, creating a softer environment around the activewear collections.

A retail layout organised around different lifestyles

Menswear occupies a distinct area at the front of the store, while the women’s collections are organised according to brand and activity, including yoga and Pilates, running, training and leisurewear. Simple signage supports navigation through the different product categories.

The customer journey also translates the retailer’s different audience profiles into a system of colours, graphics and visual cues. Pastel teal identifies the wellness-oriented “yogi”, dusty pink accompanies the “casual curator”, chartreuse introduces the more energetic “cardio junkie”, while nude tones and titanium grey distinguish further lifestyle and menswear selections.

Visual merchandising as part of the brand experience

Visual merchandising plays an important role in connecting products with The Sports Edit’s editorial identity. New collections are presented on corrugated bronze-toned table tops, accompanied by imagery, messaging and props that help define the different lifestyle narratives.

Wooden plyometric boxes, normally associated with gym equipment, become display elements for folded garments, footwear and accessories. Motivational messages are etched into their surfaces, while neon graphics guide customers through the space and reinforce the informal tone of the brand.

The walls use soft tonalities combined with chevron patterns that introduce a subtle sense of movement. Rather than functioning as decoration alone, graphics, colour and communication form part of the store’s navigation system and contribute to the relationship between physical space and brand identity.

From physical retail to digital experience

The two fitting rooms extend the social dimension of the store, with generous spaces, seating and mirrors featuring the brand’s #mysportsedit hashtag. The environment is conceived not only for trying on products but also as part of the broader interaction between the physical store and social media.

Digital integration further extends this approach. In-store tablets give visitors access to The Sports Edit’s wider online assortment, with the possibility of collecting purchases at Coal Drops Yard or having them delivered to another address. The physical boutique therefore operates as part of a broader multi-channel retail experience rather than as an isolated point of sale.

A regularly updated board communicates local classes, events, product launches and brand news, reinforcing the store’s role as a point of connection around sport and wellness. Through these elements, Design4Retail translates The Sports Edit’s digital and editorial identity into a physical environment where product display, communication and community coexist.

From concept to delivery

Design4Retail worked with The Sports Edit team, the Coal Drops Yard project management team and landlord Argent on the development of the flagship. Acting as principal designer and contractor, the studio was responsible for the project from concept development through production and installation.
