On Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles, BYREDO developed a 3,030 sq ft store in collaboration with Swedish architecture and design studio Halleroed.
Conceived as the brand’s largest store at the time of opening, the almost square interior combines Scandinavian references with the warmer character of Californian modernism, creating a flexible environment designed to evolve through exhibitions, collaborations and changing product presentations.

Scandinavian and Californian references
The design explores the relationship between Scandinavian restraint and Californian warm modernism.
A predominantly light interior is articulated through oak, elder and American walnut, combined with galvanised, polished and anodised aluminium. The contrast between timber and metal creates a balance between warmer tactile surfaces and more industrial elements.
Rather than applying a uniform retail language, the project uses different materials and furniture pieces to establish a more domestic and informal atmosphere.
A flexible space between store and gallery
The interior was conceived as a space capable of changing over time.
Alongside BYREDO products, the store can accommodate exhibitions and installations developed with artists and collaborators, extending its function beyond conventional retail.
This flexible approach allows the environment to operate partly as a gallery and social space, with product presentation integrated into a broader programme of cultural activity.

Custom furniture and display elements
Furniture and display structures play a central role in defining the interior.
Timber frames organise seating and product areas, while metal display cases and freestanding elements introduce a more technical material language.
Colour is used selectively through upholstered seating and individual display pieces, creating visual accents within the predominantly neutral architecture.
Collaboration as part of the retail concept
The store was conceived to reflect BYREDO’s collaborative approach to design and culture.
One of the first projects associated with the Los Angeles location involved artist Martine Syms, whose work extended across both an installation and products developed specifically for the store.
This relationship between retail, art and collaboration reinforces the adaptable nature of the interior, allowing the space to change without losing its architectural identity.
