How to design an original pastry shop: Oh So Yum in Bradford

Creative ideas for designing an original pastry shop

The new Oh So Yum pastry shop in Bradford, founded by Harpreet Kaur, winner of BBCโ€™s The Apprentice, is a clear example of how to design an original pastry shop through a retail language that surprises, engages and builds customer loyalty.

Located on White Abbey Road in Bradford, the 144 sqm pastry shop offers an immersive environment where colour becomes the main design element. The project, designed by creative studio Phoenix Wharf, takes inspiration from the dreamlike world of Willy Wonka, reinterpreting the imagery of sweets in a contemporary and visually engaging way.

Immersive retail design and bold colours

One of the central elements of the project is the bold use of colour. Lavender and coral floors interact with ceilings and walls painted in deep purple. The custom-made seating alternates between pink faux-leather sofas and matte metal chairs with white details.

Mint green accents complete the visual identity of the space, creating balance and variety across the different functional areas. As a result, colour is not used only as decoration, but becomes an integral part of the spatial narrative.

Food retail layout and visual storytelling

The layout is designed to guide visitors through an experiential journey: from the lounge areas to the operational zones, each environment is conceived to be intuitive and visually consistent.

The well-lit dessert display, framed by arches, fits naturally into a concept that transforms the space into an extension of the brand identity. In this sense, the project interprets food retail design as an integrated system of product display, service and perception.

An original pastry shop concept for contemporary retail

Oh So Yum is a significant case study for understanding how to design an original pastry shop that is not only functional, but also emotional. The project shows how retail design can elevate the purchasing experience, turning a commercial venue into a recognisable destination.

Through bold colours, custom furniture and a spatial organisation designed around the public, Phoenix Wharf creates an environment consistent with the brandโ€™s positioning. The identity of the product is translated into space, material and circulation, strengthening the relationship between experience, image and commercial function.
