The Hush Puppies flagship store at Hopson One in Shanghai interprets the brand’s casual lifestyle through a project developed by Hush Puppies and STILL YOUNG. Across 137 sqm, light-toned wood, diffused lighting and modular display systems define an immersive environment conceived more as an urban retreat than a conventional retail space.
Founded in 1958, the American brand has built its identity around an informal and comfortable lifestyle. The project translates these values into a physical environment through domestic atmospheres, warm materials and references to the world of travel.

A concept inspired by domestic comfort
The concept revolves around the idea of “coming home”, developed through settings that evoke everyday domestic life and the slower rhythm of leisure time.
The different areas of the store suggest familiar environments, from the living room to the bedroom, without reproducing them literally. Textures, proportions and display configurations change along the route, while the continuity of materials and tones guides visitors through a fluid and easily readable sequence.
The palette is dominated by light-toned wood and neutral colours, creating a calm and consistent atmosphere. Matt surfaces, tactile finishes and furnishings with essential geometries reinforce the welcoming character of the interior.
Materials, lighting and spatial organisation
Diffused lighting recalls the softness of natural light and reduces contrasts between the different areas of the store. Overhead, a modular structure composed of large luminous panels and technical tracks organises the space through a regular grid.
General lighting is complemented by adjustable fixtures and light sources integrated into the wall systems, used to highlight garments, accessories and display compositions. The layering of different lighting levels maintains a consistent atmosphere while ensuring that the products remain clearly visible.
The perimeter furnishings are incorporated into a continuous architectural framework characterised by frames, panelling and backlit niches. This configuration integrates display, storage and visual communication, avoiding the fragmentation of the space.

Travel as a narrative element
One of the project’s most recognisable features is its reference to the world of travel. Trunks and volumes inspired by luggage design recur throughout the store, serving as displays, platforms, seating and central structures.
Straps, fastenings, profiles and construction details recall the language of travel trunks. The layered compositions introduce variations in height and create focal points without interrupting the visual continuity of the interior.
The travel theme is therefore not expressed through an isolated decorative feature, but incorporated into the structure of the furnishings and the way the products are presented.
The central installation in blue acrylic
At the centre of the store, a composition in translucent blue acrylic interrupts the predominance of timber surfaces. The semi-transparent volumes are combined with wooden elements resembling trunks and platforms, creating a display structure that also serves as the main visual focal point.
The colour and transparency evoke the imagery of water and introduce a reference to resort and holiday aesthetics. The pale blue tone emerges subtly within the natural palette, distinguishing the central area without disrupting the overall chromatic balance.
A rug with an irregular texture in shades of blue further defines this area and helps organise the layout through a perceptual variation in the flooring.

The mascot as part of the brand identity
Hush Puppies’ long-standing mascot, the Basset Hound, appears throughout the store in the form of sculptures, images and graphic details.
The figures are integrated into the central displays, wall-mounted systems and shop windows, where they accompany mannequins and products. Their presence introduces an immediately recognisable element and visually reinforces the brand identity without overwhelming the architecture.
On the exterior, a large curved image and backlit shop windows make the storefront clearly visible from the shopping centre gallery. Photography, signage and product displays are incorporated into the same timber composition used throughout the interior.
A modular and flexible display system
The display system combines wall-mounted structures, platforms, cubes, open modules and clothing rails. The different components can be reconfigured to accommodate changes in collections and visual merchandising.
The central elements remain compact and preserve clear views across the store. The fitted walls provide greater display density, while freestanding units introduce points of interest along the customer journey.
The modular system allows the layout to evolve over time while maintaining consistency between architecture, furnishings and visual identity. The Hush Puppies flagship store thus creates a retail environment in which domestic comfort, travel culture and display flexibility operate as parts of a single design system.
