Bar Galatea in Mondello, designed by Luigi Smecca Architetti, reinterprets a 1920s building through a contemporary hospitality design defined by Mediterranean colours, essential boiserie, coffered ceilings and geometric flooring. The project is located within the seaside context of Palermo and develops a restrained architectural language capable of connecting historical memory with a contemporary identity.
The intervention preserves the original decorative details and the historic façade palette, maintaining a coherent relationship with the urban fabric of Mondello. Inside, sage green tones and uniform surfaces contribute to a bright and relaxed atmosphere in dialogue with the coastal landscape and Mediterranean vegetation.
Mediterranean colours and spatial continuity
The project uses colour as a tool for spatial continuity. Green shades applied to boiserie, furniture and vertical surfaces define homogeneous and visually fluid interiors, avoiding strong contrasts and perceptual fragmentation.
The chromatic composition interacts with natural light and reinforces the relationship between the interior architecture and the seaside context, contributing to a measured and coherent contemporary identity.
Coffered ceiling and contemporary boiserie
The coffered ceiling is one of the most distinctive elements of the project. Its geometry defines the rhythm and depth of the interior while establishing a dialogue with the essential boiserie covering the walls.
The boiserie reinterprets decorative tradition through a contemporary approach, avoiding monumental effects. The result is an elegant yet understated interior where the historic structure of the building is redefined through a sober and carefully balanced design language.

Geometric flooring and spatial rhythm
The flooring introduces a stronger graphic component into the project. The herringbone pattern, developed through beige, brown and green tones, accompanies the circulation path inside the bar and creates rhythm throughout the sequence of spaces.
The floor becomes an identity-defining element while remaining balanced with the rest of the project. Its graphic pattern guides the eye, reinforces spatial depth and contributes to a dynamic interior experience.
Lighting design and interior atmosphere
Natural and artificial light both contribute to the atmosphere of the interior. The lighting design enhances materials, colours and architectural details while accompanying the different areas of the bar throughout the day.
Pendant lights and discreet luminous accents interact with daylight to amplify the softness of the green palette. The project avoids excessive contrasts and develops a diffused brightness coherent with the Mediterranean character of the space.
Marine identity and contemporary hospitality
Marine-themed artworks placed throughout the interior reinforce the connection with Mondello and its seaside identity. The reference to the landscape does not become decorative narration but remains integrated within the architectural and chromatic composition.
Bar Galatea defines a contemporary hospitality environment where comfort, architectural quality and spatial sensitivity converge into a coherent Mediterranean experience. The project develops through subtle layers, resulting in a bright and recognisable interior rooted in its local context.
