Munich temporary store in Barcelona: GRID concept design

Studio Animal concept store GRID per Munich

Isotropy and temporal sustainability define the design of the Munich temporary store in Barcelona, developed by Studio Animal led by Javier J. Iniesta. The project introduces a radical approach to retail design, where structure, material and display logic converge into a single coherent system.

A modular and isotropic retail space

The concept is based on the creation of an isotropic space, meaning a spatial system with uniform properties in every direction. The layout is generated by a 60×60 cm modular grid, which organises product display through a clear and rigorous principle: one module, one product.

This three-dimensional grid extends seamlessly across floor, walls and ceiling, producing a homogeneous and potentially infinite spatial perception. The result is an immersive environment with a strong visual identity and a clear, immediate reading of the merchandise.

Sustainable materials for temporary retail

The temporary nature of the installation guided the choice of construction system and materials. The entire project is based on a single solution: 100% recyclable honeycomb cardboard.

The store is built using 15 mm panels, externally finished with white stucco, for a total of approximately 120 cardboard sheets. This approach not only reduces environmental impact but also reinforces the visual identity of the space.

The display elements consist of double-layer ribs, assembled with exposed edges. This solution enhances the raw material quality and generates the project’s defining feature: the visible brown grid.

Material optimisation and waste reduction

The project also stands out for its efficient production strategy. All components are cut directly from the panels, maximising material use and minimising waste.

The double-layer system ensures the required structural rigidity, allowing the installation to support both its own weight and the displayed products without additional materials.

The Munich temporary store in Barcelona demonstrates how retail design can integrate modularity, sustainability and clarity, transforming a temporary installation into a coherent and recognisable spatial experience.
