Angel Care Pharmacy in Philadelphia by Sergio Mannino

Esterno Farmacia Angel Care

Angel Care Pharmacy commissioned Sergio Mannino Studio (SMS) to design its new neighborhood pharmacy in Philadelphia. The project fits within the field of pharmacy design, where spatial organization plays a key role in supporting healthcare services and strengthening community relationships.

In recent years, the city of Philadelphia has faced the consequences of the drug crisis in the United States, particularly linked to the widespread use of the painkiller OxyContin and its cheaper and more lethal substitute, Fentanyl. Within this context, there is a growing need for local facilities capable of providing support and accessible healthcare services.

Olivia Tchanque, owner of Angel Care Pharmacy, believes that small daily actions can generate meaningful change within the community. In collaboration with Sergio Mannino Studio, the project aims to create a positive impact by offering both pharmaceutical products and a welcoming, supportive environment.

Characterized by a modern and functional design, the space features a warm and relaxed atmosphere intended to make visitors feel at ease. Despite a limited budget, the project has been carefully developed, including a waiting area, a consultation room and a spacious retail area.

The space

The pharmacy occupies a space originally divided into two separate units by a load-bearing wall. To achieve a more functional layout, portions of the wall were removed to connect the two areas, while a new partition separates the laboratory from the retail space. Given budget constraints, the design focused on essential visual and functional elements.

The retail area offers a welcoming environment that encourages customers to explore the products. Two service counters have been introduced to streamline prescription pick-up, improving operational efficiency. The back-of-house area is organized to support pharmacistsโ€™ workflows, while a private consultation room allows for confidential interactions and personalized assistance.

Brand identity

Sergio Mannino Studio also developed the brand identity, including logo, packaging, business cards and merchandising elements. The logo reflects the pharmacyโ€™s mission centered on care and community, incorporating an angel wing as a symbol of protection and attention. Sergio Mannino, founder of SMS, highlights the importance of the project: โ€œWorking with clients who have a clear mission and a strong desire to make a difference is always inspiring. I hope our design contributes to creating a welcoming environment for the pharmacyโ€™s customers.โ€

Sustainability in pharmacy design

With an average of 60,000 prescriptions per pharmacy, plastic waste management represents a significant issue. Angel Care adopts alternative solutions by using compostable bottles and bags made from renewable resources, reducing environmental impact.

This approach sets an example for the pharmaceutical sector, encouraging more sustainable practices and promoting a broader reduction in plastic use.
