Viruta Lab designs a poetic sanctuary for the soul and mental health in Valencia

Inspired by Plato’s allegory of the winged chariot, the new psychology center designed by Viruta Lab presents itself as a refuge dedicated to mental health and emotional well-being. Raw materials, mortar walls, light modulation, rich textiles and bespoke furniture define the welcoming aesthetic language of the space, expressing the complexity of the human condition.

The architecture and interior design studio Viruta Lab completes one of its most distinctive projects with this psychology center in Valencia. The space is conceived to evoke the calmness of a domestic environment, allowing patients to feel at ease. It functions as a sanctuary for the mind, heart and soul, offering a relaxed and barrier-free setting where individuals can share their experiences.

The concept of the space is a dance of contrasts

Under the creative direction of architect María Daroz and architect and interior designer David Puerta, Viruta Lab develops a spatial narrative based on contrast. Inspired by Plato’s allegory, the project translates the duality of the human soul into architectural language.

A black-and-white frieze runs throughout the perimeter, visually dividing the space into two realms. Most of the environment is dedicated to the earthly dimension, representing the process of overcoming difficulties. This architectural gesture establishes a balance between opposites, where light and darkness coexist.

The ceiling introduces two shades of blue, generating depth and spatial perception. The dark carpet covering the floor reinforces a sense of calm and warmth, acting as an anchor to the physical dimension. In selected areas, the carpet extends into the baseboard, creating continuity and fluid transitions.

The layout is organized around a central waiting area, from which consultation rooms are accessed through a narrow corridor. Irregularities in the existing structure are resolved through a large wooden volume that integrates installations, storage, kitchen and service areas.

Marine plywood with a matte finish defines this architectural element. The modulated surfaces create a rhythm of vertical perforations, enabling ventilation while integrating door systems within a coherent visual language.

The chosen materiality is an ode to the search for beauty in imperfection

The project embraces the imperfections of space through mortar walls manually grooved with a toothed trowel. This living material, shaped by hand, expresses diversity and irregularity as aesthetic values.

The interior language is consistent and continuous, with grooved mortar acting as a unifying element throughout the project. It becomes a material narrative that reflects human complexity in a subtle and controlled way.

Blue-toned paints enhance depth, while porcelain elements in beige and black regulate the perceived height of the space. Perforated wood and dark carpeting contribute to a warm and intimate atmosphere. The lighting design relies on indirect sources, reinforcing comfort and spatial softness.

The furniture has been custom designed by Viruta Lab

Tables, benches and shelves are designed to express material honesty. Raw finishes, visible joints and solid structures reinforce the coherence of the overall aesthetic.

Textiles such as curtains and cushions are also custom-designed, contributing to the sensory quality of the environment. Each element is carefully integrated to create a space that is both functional and emotionally supportive.
