Blue Voyage is an architectural installation in 3D printed ceramic designed by Studio RAP for the entrance of Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab in Dubai. Positioned on both sides of the main gateway, the two ceramic walls define the transition toward the lobby and transform the entrance area into a scenographic, immersive and contemplative space.
An installation inspired by the Arabian Gulf
The project draws inspiration from the nearby Arabian Gulf. The sinuous surfaces evoke the movement of waves, while the three-dimensional patterns become progressively more complex as visitors approach the walls. The surface design connects fluid lines, layered reliefs and shifting reflections, creating a dynamic perception of space.
Natural light entering from the entrance interacts with the ceramic material and continuously changes the reading of the surfaces throughout the day. In this way, the installation does not simply define an architectural backdrop but actively contributes to the perceptual experience of the atrium.
The large corner tiles, specifically designed for this project, allow the texture to wrap around the edges without visual interruptions. This continuity reinforces the sculptural character of the walls and emphasizes the spatial clarity of the entire entrance.
3D printed ceramic walls designed by Studio RAP
Each wall measures approximately 6 metres in height and 9 metres in length. For Blue Voyage, the Dutch studio designed and 3D printed around 900 unique ceramic tiles, generated through parametric processes and produced internally in the Rotterdam laboratory.

This approach allowed precise control over the geometry of each component, their assembly system and the overall material quality of the intervention. Computational design therefore becomes an operational tool to build a continuous and highly articulated architectural surface.
In this project, 3D printed ceramic combines formal freedom with technical accuracy and construction consistency. Each element contributes to shaping an architectural landscape that unfolds as a sequence of waves, cavities and reliefs.
Technology, craftsmanship and material continuity
Blue Voyage represents one of the largest architectural installations made with 3D printed ceramic. The project reflects Studio RAP’s ongoing research into the integration of computational design, advanced fabrication techniques and the material culture of ceramics.
The collaboration with Royal Tichelaar for firing and glazing highlights the dialogue between digital production and traditional craftsmanship. The result is an expressive and durable intervention fully integrated into the architectural context of Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab.
More than a simple cladding, the two walls define an architectural threshold that organizes movement, amplifies natural light and introduces visitors to a spatial experience with a strong identity.
