Bitter Sweetie is a dessert shop in Tianjin located in the Italian Style Quarter, at the center of the city’s main urban area along the Hai River. Set within a context linked to Hospitality projects, the district preserves more than one hundred Italian-style buildings, now transformed into contemporary commercial environments.

The project develops within this layered context, where architectural preservation and commercial transformation coexist. Rather than treating the historic setting as a backdrop, the interior design uses it as an active framework for the spatial narrative.

Urban context and historical background

The Tianjin Italian Style Quarter sits at the center of the main urban area along the Hai River. Once the historic Italian concession, it still showcases more than a hundred preserved Italian-style buildings, now revitalized as commercial hubs.

Integrating Italian heritage with artistic dessert design

With a deep respect for local history, All Design Studio retains the architectural identity while introducing artistic references inspired by desserts and painting. The result is a space where consumption is paired with sensory and visual experience.

The red brick arched building maintains its historical features, while the interior continues this dialogue, allowing the commercial function to grow from the architectural context.

A sensory entrance blending color and architecture

The entrance features arched doors that connect interior and exterior. Pistachio-colored panels contrast with red brick surfaces, creating a balance between vibrancy and historical solidity.

Natural materials and a vibrant color palette define the interior. Terrazzo flooring and marble elements contribute to a layered material narrative connected to time and place.

The saffron ceiling, wooden veneers, and chocolate-toned finishes create a cohesive atmosphere that translates pastry aesthetics into spatial design.
